For students applying for Fall 2027, the most important date is often not the Regular Decision deadline. Early Action, Early Decision and scholarship-priority deadlines can materially change both admission strategy and cost.

The main deadline types

  • Early Action (EA): usually nonbinding.
  • Early Decision (ED): binding if admitted and the financial package is affordable under the school's process.
  • Regular Decision (RD): the standard final application round.
  • Rolling admission: applications are reviewed as files become complete.
  • Priority scholarship deadline: a separate date that may control merit eligibility.

Why November matters

Many U.S. colleges place important EA, ED and scholarship deadlines around November 1, with others using October 15, November 15 or December 1. Families should build their calendar school by school rather than assuming one universal deadline.

Scholarship deadlines can be earlier than admission deadlines

Competitive full-tuition and full-ride programs may require a separate application, nomination or earlier admission submission. Missing the scholarship date can make an otherwise affordable college impossible.

Build the schedule backwards

Start with the earliest scholarship-sensitive school, then nonbinding EA opportunities, then rolling schools, then remaining Regular Decision applications. Binding ED should be used only after the financial risk is understood.
